An Attempt to Adapt a Logic of Conditional Preferences for Reasoning with Contrary-To-Duties

چکیده
This paper presents some preliminary work which attempts to adapt, in the context of deontic reasoning, the CO logic deened by Boutilier for reasoning with conditional preferences. The rst motivation for this work is that deontic logic can be given a semantics in terms of ordered worlds as in CO logic: the preference relation among worlds aims at ordering worlds from the most ideal ones to the least ideal ones. The second motivation is that Boutilier introduced a model of an agent's ability by distinguishing between controllable, innuenceable and uninnuenceable propositions. And we noticed that this partition can be related to the notions introduced by Carmo and Jones for reasoning with Contrary-To-Duties. This present work shows an extension of Boutilier's work in order to use CO logic for reasoning with Contrary-To-Duties. The results obtained with this extension do not coincide exactly with those obtained by Carmo and Jones: the full impact of these diierences has not yet been studied.

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners
A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...
متن کاملA Modal Characterization of Defeasible Deontic Conditionals and Conditional Goals
We explore the notions of permission and obligation and their role in knowledge representation, especially as guides to action for planning systems. We first present a simple conditional deontic logic (or more accurately a preference logic) of the type common in the literature and demonstrate its equivalence to a number of modal and conditional systems for default reasoning. We show how the tec...
متن کاملCompleteness and decidability results for a logic of contrary-to-duty conditionals
This article has two parts. In Part I, we briefly outline the analysis of ‘contrary-to-duty’ obligation sentences presented in our 2002 handbook chapter ‘Deontic logic and contrary-to-duties’, with a focus on the intuitions that motivated the basic formal-logical moves we made. We also explain that the present account of the theory differs in two significant respects from the earlier version, o...
متن کاملToward a Logic for Qualitative Decision Theory
We present a logic for representing and reasoning with qualitative statements of preference and normality and describe how these may interact in decision making under uncertainty. Our aim is to develop a logical calculus that employs the basic elements of classical decision theory, namely probabilities, utilities and actions, but exploits qualitative information about these elements directly fo...
